Why Sustainable Consumption?

Climate change as a whole is going to severely impact on our lives and the lives of future generations over the next century and beyond. The evidence for anthropogenic warming is practically certain and it is therefore time to turn our attention to mitigating and adapting to these future changes.

I come from a mainly "hard science" background, having studied Geology and Geography at undergraduate level. Whilst this has given me a good grounding for the causes of anthropogenic global warming, I feel I am lacking somewhat in the social and political aspects of climate change. You can only get so far looking at facts and figures! It is mainly for this reason that I have chosen to study Sustainable Consumption this semester, to give me a more rounded view of the issues surrounding climate change.

After I graduate I hope to go into a career in energy consultancy, by going into businesses and helping them to become more energy efficient. It is therefore important for me to have an understanding of how society needs to change in order to become more sustainable and some of the recommended methods by which this can hopefully be achieved or at least improved, which I hope this module will be able to provide.

Climate change must be considered holistically if we are to act to reduce the impacts we are causing to our environment and I hope that by the end of this module I will have a more rounded opinion of climate change and the challenges we still face, to compliment my existing scientific knowledge. I also hope to have a better understanding of how we as individuals can take account of our own actions and do our bit to reduce our impact on the environment on a local scale.

Welcome

Hi,
Thanks for looking at my blog. Here's a little bit about me, I'm studying an MSc in Climate Change at UEA and this is the main reason for this blog - to encourage healthy debate about all things climate related. So feel free to leave any messages around this or any other topics that take your fancy.
Enjoy,
Lou
